Can you open your wesleyan email address, ever? I've forwarded a recent RPCV msg about educational resources there, because I don't know how to "send" msg's to you here... You're so good at developing resources, thot you'd want to read it... anyhow... hope my favorite idealistic pragmatist is having a good weekend. Best - KME

There's a guy your age (whom you met once, I beleive)who did Computer work for me who is stationed in ? Maritainia, Africa.

His name is Will Ryan and his Email is wil_ryan@yahoo.com

IF you ever meet him, say hello.

get back to me to confirm that you get my notes and memos.

There are two books I suggest. ONe is TWO YEARS BEFORE THE MAST (especially the forward/introduction). Written by guy who after one year at Harvard dropped out (in 1815 and due to a med. defect which resolved itself eventually) and sailed for two years in the U.S. Merchant Marine "before the mast" (where the common sailors were housed aboard ship, located just forward of the mast). He later returned to Harvard, graduated and became a writer and lawyer.

And the biography of James Michner - a 19 year old kid who started out as one of thousands of sailors sent over to the south pacific in WWII and who soaked it all in and became a prolific writer(Tales of the South Pacific and then many books about his travels around the world after that).

It seems to me that your idea of becoming a writer is really solid. How you're ever going to make a living at it will fall in place as you just keep doing what you have a passion for. I'm thrilled for you because what you're pursuing seems so purely you - i.e., you are following what YOU want and not of fear or pressure from an outside source. Just keep your integrity and keep knowing who you are and what you value and the outside forces will only buffet you about and give you perspective. They won't corrode you.
Which is not to say you won't be scared a lot of the time, but your choices needn't be limited by your fear.
I love you and think of you every day.
Dad.

NATE,
This relates to your blog of September about your blanket policy. I thought your insights into the culture (not anything ethnically based, but societally based) was very astutely analyzed and articulated. I thought that what you had to say about the hopes and dreams of the people you have met and the unique position you have was profound. As I have consistently, I think you're powers of analysis and articulation are awesome. These articulations strike me as the basis of a book which after this gets started ( as opposed to "after this is over" - of which it's really just an introduction) would be really of interest to a lot of people and, more important, give a side of what's going on which people need to know.

I, of course, think your punctuation sucks, but I attribute that to intention and laziness, as I have seen you write (punctuate and gramartize)superbly, when it really mattered (last term paper, etc.) I'm sending you a separate memo on that.
